Organic Red Quinoa £1.09p/100g
Red quinoa is a rare pasankalla and has a mild, sweet fluffy texture. It is also the crunchier and more flavorful counterpart of white quinoa but still as useful and versatile. The only comparison lies in the fact that red and black quinoa stays firmer after cooking than white ones. But everything else as far as nutrients are the same.
Quinoa, the "mother grain," is an extremely nutritious seed. It has a protein value that is extremely high (12-18%) and the protein it supplies is complete protein, meaning that it includes all nine essential amino acids. Because of this, it takes less quinoa protein to meet one's protein need than wheat protein. Quinoa is easy to digest and naturally contains no gluten. It is also a good source of dietary fibre, phosphorous, magnesium, and iron.
Quinoa is often referred to as a seed or a whole grain as it is unpolished and completely organic.
It is the perfect alternative to rice or couscous and does not have any gluten containing ingredients.
Benefits of organic quinoa
Rich source of protein
High in fibre
Packed with vitamins and minerals such as iron
Versatile - can be used for both sweet and savoury dishes and recipesOrganic Red Quinoa
Use quinoa in the way that you would for rice, couscous, pilafs, barley etc.
Thoroughly rinse before cooking to remove its outer coating (called saponin). If not rinsed, this can leave a bitter and soapy taste once the quinoa is cooked.
To cook, just prepare as if it were rice - cover with water or vegetable broth and simmer over medium heat until soft, about 12 minutes, giving it a couple of quick stirs.
Then just add some veggies and a dressing to make an easy quinoa salad, or swap out white rice for quinoa to serve with any kind of vegetable stir-fry or substitute it in any fried rice dish.
For a fast and simple side dish, drizzle over some olive oil, sea salt and lemon juice or a bit of garlic and add a touch of nutritional yeast or parmesan cheese.
Quinoa also makes a great hot breakfast cereal, similar to oatmeal.
If you cook a little extra, pop it into an airtight container in the fridge or freezer, and you'll have some ready to toss it into any dish for added texture and nutrition.
Store in a cool dry place away from sunlight.
